Raul Curiel Gets Weird Stoppage, Manny Flores Shines on Golden Boy Card

Raul Curiel Gets Weird Stoppage, Manny Flores Shines on Golden Boy Card

Fight fans got their second midweek card in two nights. This time it was the prospect-based Golden Boy Live card at the Fantasy Springs in Indio, California, live on DAZN. In the evening's main event, surging 147-pound prospect Raul "Cugar" Curiel, a former Mexican Olympian, looked to stay hot and follow up on his impressive stoppage victories over Kendo Castaneda and Brad Solomon, when he locked up with Courtney Pennington, a savvy Brooklynite.

After a slow and strategic opening round, Curiel picked it up in the second. He began getting aggressive, cutting off the ring and backing the Brooklynite into the ropes. However, Pennington stayed calm and worked off the jab. He scored with the jab and little else. He was losing rounds but was competitive and very much in the fight.

the fight stayed strategic in round three, and the contrast of styles was on full display. Curiel was trying to come forward but not firing all that much. While Pennington was jabbing and moving off the back foot and firing the job. He was able to avoid most of Curiel's fire. The Mexican was winning the rounds by firing off combinations in spots and landing and partly landing with big left hooks and right hands here and there, but the action was slow through four.

Curiel picked up the pace in the eighth and ninth, seemingly having his eye on the stoppage. Cugar was ripping body shots, and Pennington really started to slow down. The New Yorker remained crafty, but his punches became more and more sparse, as he was clearly in survival mode. Curiel began trapping him in the corner and against the ropes and punishing him on the inside until Pennington could slide out of trouble. Pennington came out aggressive with a bit more gusto in the 10th and final round. However, that was quickly silenced by a big left hook from Curiel that put his man back on the defensive, and Pennington went Fully in survival mode. The former Olympian scored with a couple of left hooks at the one-minute mark that caught his opponent's attention, but Curiel seemed content going the distance as well. That's when something really bizarre happened. With 10 seconds left, Curiel landed the final punch of the night, another solid hook that sent Pennington backward but not in any particular trouble at all. The referee stepped in and called a halt to the bout. Awarding Curiel a 10th-round TKO with seven seconds left. Pennington's corner protested, but to little avail, and Curiel moved to 13-0 (11).

In the evening's co-main event Manny Flores, of Coachella, California, bounced back from his first career loss about as well as you possibly can. Flores took on Jerson Ortiz of Nicaragua, a tough journeyman expected to go rounds with Flroes and make him work. However, he offered very little resistance as Flores scored two knockdowns in the first round courtesy of the right hook. Flores, a southpaw, stayed aggressive. Knowing he had his man in trouble, he unleashed a chopping right hand when he had Ortiz backed into the corner that landed squarely and dropped the Nicaraguan for a third time. The bout was immediately waved off, giving the Coachella Valley native the second KO and improving his record to 16-1 (12).

The card also features Flores's little cousin, a sharp-looking prospect, by the name of Grant Flores, who we've seen on the Golden Boy Live series before. He scored a six-round unanimous decision over Jaleik Bogle, dropping him in the fifth on his way to moving his record to 3-0 (3).

The undercard featured two other highly touted blue chip prospects, including Golden Boy's newest acquisition, Daniel Luna of Victorville, California. A tall rangy 5'9, 130 pounder who is just 21 years old. Luna looked super impressive in scoring a second-round KO. A one-punch body shot stoppage. A single left hook to the body dropped an outgunned Alexander Gutierrez, tried valiantly to get up. However, he couldn’t make it to his feet, and Luna got his hand raised. Moving his record to 3-0 (3). Also, Jorge Chavez scored an impressive third-round KO of rugged veteran Marvin Solano to improve his record to 8-0 (6).

Fight Week Preview

Fight Week Preview: Four Televised Cards this week

On another quiet week of pugilism, fight fans can actually get their fix on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The Midweek cards are in the US and the weekend cards will have a little international flair in Canada and Italy.

The action kicks off on PROBOX TV. The series has become a staple for the hardcore fight fan, airing every other Wednesday and filling the gap between big-time weekend fights. In the night's main event, hard-hitting Serbian light heavyweight Radivoje "Hot Rod" Kalajdzic, 27-2 (19), makes one last push at a world title as he takes on slick-moving Brit Mickey Ellison 14-4 (5). It's an absolute most-win fight for each man if they plan on getting back into the title picture at 175. Ellison has won two in a row since his points loss to Charlie Schofield in 2021, which was on the heels of a very disappointing performance in which he was annihilated by Padraig McCrory in one round. Kalajdzic has once challenged for a world title and was stopped by pound-for-pound elite and future hall of famer Artur Beterbiev in 2019 in five one-sided rounds. "Hot Rod" has won three straight since the Beterbiev beat down, including his most recent performance, a first-round stoppage of Ernest Amuzu last May.

In the co-main event undefeated super featherweight, "The Silent Assassin" Charles Foster battles Misael Lopez for the vacant WBA Fedecentro Super Featherweight strap. Lopez has lost two in a row to Edward Vazquez on Showtime Shovbox and then followed that up with being stopped by Sulaiman Segawa in the 10th round in May. Foster is unbeaten 15-0 (9) and will enter the ring for the first time in 2023 after a breakout 2022 that saw him pick up wins over Avery Sparrow and Edwin De Los Santos.

Also on the card is touted Featherweight prospect and Florida native Dominick Valle, who will put his 6-0 (5) record on the line against Damian Alcala 7-2 (1). Also, fan-favorite Filipino slugger Jonas Sultan, 18-6 (11), looks to bounce back from his controversial loss to Paul Butler a year and a half ago as he steps in with Frank Gonzalez.

The action moves to California on Thursday for a second-midweek card. The Golden Boy Live series continues with highly touted but somewhat inactive welterweight prospect Raul Curiel returning to the ring. Curiel sports a record of 12- 0 (10) and emerged in late 2021 when he stopped Kendo Castaneda. He battles rugged veteran and native New Yorker Courtney Pennington 17-6-3 (7). Pennington has tested big names like Patrick Day, Charles Conwell, and James Metcalf. Also on the card is undefeated prospect Jorge Chavez, 7-0 (5), who battles Marvin Solano, Nicaraguan veteran Marvin Solano. Solano has been a stepping stone for names like Jeyvier Cintron and Ramon Cardenas. The card also features 20-year-old lightweight prospect Leonardo Snachez, 5-0 (4) Sanchez captured the attention of hardcore fans after his spectacular performance in May, annihilating Uhlices Avelino-Reyes in two brutally one-sided rounds.

The action moves to Italy on Saturday and can be viewed on the Federazione Pugilistica Italiana YouTube channel. In the evening's main event, Gianluca Picardi, 11-2 (3), battles southpaw Venezuelan Rafael Hernandez for the IBF Mediterranean lightweight title. Picardi last fought in August, bouncing back nicely from his second career loss by scoring a third-round TKO of Maycol Escobar.

The final action of the weekend takes place on Saturday evening and takes place in Quebec, Canada, and Airs on ESPN+ in the Main Event Undefeated Super Middleweight Christian Mbilli 24-0 (20) of France looks to take a major stride forward when he takes on American Demond Nicholson, 26-5-1 (22) for the WBC Continental Americas Super Middleweight strap. Nicholson last fought Demetrius Andrade and dropped a unanimous decision back in January. In the co-main event, Canadian fan favorite Steve Claggett battles Carlos Sanchez for the NABF 140-pound strap. Claggett stopped former world champion Alberto Machado in three rounds, just three months ago.

Chris Eubank Jr. dominates, Settles score with Beefy Smith.

Chris Eubank Jr dominates and Settles the score with Beefy Smith.

The son of the former middleweight legend got his revenge in Manchester tonight as Chris Eubank Sr flipped the Script on "Beefy" Liam Smith, stopping Smith in 10 largely one-sided rounds. Euban moved his record to 33-3 (24), while Smith fell to 33-4-1 (20). Smith finished off Eubank in the same ring, in the same venue, back in January in the fourth round, so it was fitting that Eubank changed the tides and perhaps saved his career in the fourth round, dropping Smith in the fourth round of their rematch with a well-placed uppercut. Smith, who turned an ankle, moved on the injured wheel but was noticeably favoring the lead foot. Eubank appeared too quick for Beefy, scoring with precise combinations throughout the scheduled 12-rounder. He became someone a static target while Eubank teed off on Smith. The end came 1:45 into the 10th round as referee Kevin Parker saw enough after a ferocious barrage of power shots landed flush on Smith and dropped him for a second and final time. The bout was shortly waved by referee Kevin Parker, saving an adamant Smith from further punishment. The sprained ankle did seem to affect the movement of Smith, who is now 35. Eubank called out legendary middleweight Gennady Golovkinafter the fight, but perhaps a rubber match is in the cards for the pair.

In a less-than-entertaining undercard, Adam Azim showed that he was a level ahead of Ukrainian opponent Aram Faniian but probably not a future world champion. In a one-sided, but not particularly thrilling affair, Azim moved to 9-0 (6) but showed no urgency and an inability to get an outmatched opponent out. Azim has no shortage of skills and dominated the 10-round affair with scores of 100-90, 99-91,98-92. The 21-year-old from Berkshire UK stuck to mostly single shots and seemed content with running out the clock.

2021 Olympic Bronze Medalist Fraze Clarke had an interesting night with Dave Allen. All's well that ends well for Clarke, I suppose, who moved on to 8-0 (6) in what was not his most spectacular performance and was mere inches and moments away from ending in a DQ loss due to very close and questionable low blows. The messy affair eventually ended in his sixth KO in eight rights as Allen quit on his stool after the sixth round. The Olympian's performance was largely underwhelming in offensive terms. Uk fan-friendly slugger Allen kept his hands in his pockets for most of the scheduled 10-rounder. However, he had success when he did open up and scored with a long winging overhand right that dented and marked up the face of Clarke' "Big Fraze" was taking the rounds but giving them back as he continued to hit Allen on and around the beltline on the EXTREMELY high cup of Allen. After having two points deducted for low blows. Clarke landed another one south of the border. It appeared that would be the night, and Allen would be awarded the DQ win. However, the ref decided to give Clarke another warning. The Olympic Medalist scored with a clean combination just before the bell, and that was enough for Allen, who would not answer the bell.

Antwi, Arthur Score Late, Dramatic KO’s

Antwi, Arthus score late, dramatic KO’s

What a night in Bolton, England! Two dramatic KO's that saved world title aspirations. 32-year-old Lyndon "King" Arthur and Samuel "True Sensation" Antwi rally late to score sensational one-punch knockouts on an absolutely thrilling Friday night card.

In the evening's main event, 31-year-old Antwi, 17-2 (8), saved the night with a knockout in the final thirty seconds. The Londoner took the early rounds using his jab and his movement. Much more off the backfoot and lateral. Antwi edged out round after round, using his jab and setting up power shots. He scored plenty off clean right hands and left hook, but they seemed not to fade the rugged Mason Cartwright 19-4-1(8), Cartwright, 31 years old of Cheshire, UK, landed plenty of good shorts of his own but was taking two to get one as Antwi was running away with the fight on the cards. Winning no less than seven of the first eight rounds. Antwi begins showboating, taunting, and bolo punching. However, Cartwright was losing the battle, but the war was very much in doubt as a right hand wobbled the Londoner in the ninth. Cartwright again had Antwi in a world of trouble in the 10th and had something going. Entering the championship rounds, Antwi had it on points if he could make it through the fight. However, the momentum was fully in favor of the Chesire native, who landed more thudding power shots, forced the action in on Antwi, and eeked out a competitive 11th. Needing a knockout it appeared Cartwright pushed the action, and an exhausted Antwi, who is skilled on the inside, had no legs left. The two traded on the inside, with about 30 seconds left, a truly sensational left hook, followed by a right hand dropped and ended the night for Cartwright. Giving Antwi the 12th-round TKO victory and propelling him to bigger things.

In the evening's co-main event, Arthur was beaten and battered and looked lethargic after being thoroughly beaten up by Braian Suarez of Argentina. Shortly After being warned for hitting to the back of the head in the fourth, the Argentine landed a perfectly placed left hook that dropped big Arthur in the final ticks. In the final moments of the fifth, a right-hand score that again wobbled Arthur. Suarez seized control of the fight, shoulder rolling and countering on the inside and scoring at will. After boxing well in the first few rounds, Arthur looked to be out of his league! However, that's the beauty of boxing. The 10th round started unspectacularly for the King until a left hook landed on the liver of Suarez, putting his opponent down for the count. Suarez tried desperately to beat the count, but it was not to be! As Arthur captured the IBO world light heavyweight title.

The undercard featured two highly skilled prospects who kept their undefeated record in place. Ben Marksby moved his record to 8-0 (0), overcoming a point deduction to take a decision 77-75. Much closer than it needed to be, Marksby showed off terrific hand speed and combination punching in outclassing a rugged and determined Jordan Ellison. Also, Codie Smith of Yorkshire UK moved to 3-0 (0)in outworking and out-hustling Eliecer Quezada, a veteran of over 40 fights from Nicaragua. Smith dominated the action and took the 6-round Super Featherweight affair by a score of 60-54.

Fight Week Preview

On a very quiet weekend of boxing, there is just one major card, and it takes place in the UK, meaning that US fight fans will have all evening to watch the first week of college football.

The weekend's only action takes place at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England. In the evening's main event, we get a thrilling rematch between Liam Smith and Chris Eubank Jr. The pair fought in a thrilling scrap back in January after Smith outboxed Eubank over the first two rounds. Eubank rallied back in the third and tagged Smith up on the inside in round three. However, his little rally did not phase Smith came back and stopped Eubank in the fourth. Liam Smith has a record of 33-3-1 (20) and scored four consecutive stoppages, all of which are over high-caliber fighters, Eubank, Hassan Mwakinyo, Jessie Vargas, and Anthony Fowler, since his loss to Magomed Kurbanov in May of 2021. Eubank, 32-3 (23), had won six fights in a row, including stopping Matvey Korbov, before losing to Smith earlier this year.

The undercard features an intriguing bout between American Olympian and former World Champion Mikaela Mayer, 18-1 (5), and Silvia Bortot 11-2-1 (3). Bortot is coming off a controversial loss for the EBU Super Lightweight strap to Italian Flora Pili in Italy, back in May. Mayer bounced back from her first career defeat, a thorough beating from Alycia Baumgardner, by beating down Lucy Wildheart in April.

The undercard also features British Super Middleweight and surging upstart Mark Heffron, 29-2-1 (23), who has scored four consecutive stoppage victories since being stopped by Denzel Bentley in 2020. Heffron battles fan favorite Jack Cullen 21-4-1 (9). Cullen last fought in March and was annihilated by Diego Pacheco in March.

Also on the card is Adam Azim, 8-0 (6), who scored a dominant victory over unbeaten Nicaraguan prospect Santos Reyes in a matchup of unbeaten 140-pounders. Azim will step in with Aram Faniian, 23-1 (5), of Brovari, Ukraine. Faniian scored a career-best win back in 2021 when he dominated Timo Schwarzkopf back in 2021 in Germany to capture the 140-pound IBO strap.

Fight Week Preview! Usyk vs Dubois in Poland! Big Baby returns in Tulsa, Oklahoma plus the Overtime Boxing series in Atalnta!

The action opens on Friday as the Overtime Boxing series in Atlanta continues. In the evening's main event, Baltimore, Maryland native Lorenzo Simpson puts his undefeated record on the line 13-0 (7), against veteran Vladimir Hernandez 13-5 (6). Hernandez is best known for scoring consecutive upsets in 2020 and 2021 over Alfredo Angulo and then former, unified Jr Middleweight champ "Jrock" Julian Williams. Hernandez was stopped by Jesus Ramos on his last outing in February 2022. Simpson picked up a win on the Davis-Garcia undercard, taking a lopsided unanimous points decision over Pachino Hill.

On the undercard portion, undefeated Greek KO artist Andreas Katzourakis, 10-0 (8), takes on Houston native Raphael Igbokwe, who comes off his strong showing against Israil Madrimov on the Bam Rodriguez-Cristian Gonzalez card in April. Fellow Houston native Luis Acosta looks to keep his winning ways going as he battles undefeated Puerto Rican puncher Christian Barreto Gonzalez in a six-round lightweight affair.

The action moves to Poland for the big fight between the big men as unified Heavyweight champ Oleksandr Usyk 20-0 (13), follows up his two consecutive wins over Anthony Joshua by fighting fellow British big man Daniel Dubois for three of the four heavyweight crowns. Dubois, 19-1 (18), has won four bouts, all by KO and all within four rounds since his 2020 loss to Joe Joyce.

An intriguing undercard bout features undefeated Ukrainian lightweight Denys Berinch, 17-0 (9), against former world title challenger Anthony Yigit, 27-3-1 (10). Yigit is coming off a tune-up fight win over Jacob Quinn, in his home nation of Sweden via a four-round decision after his one-sided but entertaining loss to Keyshawn Davis in April.

The action moves back to the US and again the big man is the main attraction in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as Jared "Big Baby" Anderson, 15-0 (14) from Toledo, Ohio, takes on Ukrainian heavyweight Andrii Rudenko 35-6 (21) in what amounts to a get-right fight for Anderson. "Big Baby" had a less than spectacular performance in his last time out. He picked up a wide, but unspectacular UD over former world champion Charles Martin just last month. The undercard features "Shu Shu" Bruce Carrington, who takes a major step up as he battles Angel Antonio Contreras. The rest of the card is heavyweight-heavy and features Olympic gold medalist and undefeated prospect Bakhodir Jalolov. Plus a highly intriguing contest between 17-1 (13), Efe Ajagba, who has picked up two consecutive wins, including his most recent, a 10-round UD over Stephan Shaw in January, takes on undefeated Kazakh heavyweight KO artist Zhan Kossobutskiy 19-0 (18), who is largely unknown in the US and has fought predominantly in Germany the last few years. He has picked up wins over Joey Dawejko and Johann Duhaupas.

Undefeated Puerto Rican Prospect Nestor Bravo, 21-0 (15), battles Will Madera, 17-2-3 (10), in the evening's main event. He has not won since December 2021, when he outpointed Charles Tondo. The undercard features bluechip welterweight prospect Cyrus Pattinson, 6-0 (4), as he comes off his thrilling win over Chris Jenkins to battle Conah Walker 11-2 (3). Jordan Flynn, 9-0 (1), and Kane Baker, 19-10-1 (1), met up in April, and Flynn escaped with a very disputed decision. The two will lock horns again and look to settle the score once and for all.

Fight Weekend Preview

Fight Weekend Preview

Fulton and then an action-packed Wednesday in both the US and Italy. We get two more big-time cards this weekend, both in Las Vegas.

The weekend's action kicks off at the Palms Casino Resort. Women's Pound for Pound elite and unified minimum weight champion Seniesa Estrada puts her WBA and WBC belts on the line against former IBF Flyweight Leonela Paola Yudica,19-1-3 (1). Yudica was fighting out of weight class when she captured her IBF strap. Yudica was picked-off by Arely Mucino in a very close decision. She bounced back in April with a points victory over Tamara Elisabet Demarco in her native Argentina. Fighting at her more natural weight, she should be a solid test for Estrada, who has looked unbeatable in compiling a 24-0 (9). Estrada last fought in March and shut out Tina Rupprecht.

The co-main event features an intriguing 130-pound matchup between Andre Cortes, 19-0 (10), takes on the biggest fight of his career as he battles Xavier Martinez, 18-1 (12), in a must-win fight for Martinez who suffered the first loss of his career in January of 2022 to Robson Conceicao. He bounced back nicely and beat Alejandro "Pork Chop" Guerrero last August. A win here propels Martinez straight into the world title picture, while a loss throws him into irrelevancy.

The card also features Abraham Nova in a must-win fight, as well as Carlos Balderas, Dante Benjamin, and Subaru Murata in a very busy Friday night card.

The action moves to the T-Mobile Arena for the big fight. Undefeated 28-0 (22), Dallas, Texas, native Errol Spence puts his WBC, WBA, and IBF world titles on the line against WBO champ and Omaha, Nebraska native Terence Crawford 39-0 (30). Crawford is 7-0 (7) since making the jump from 140 to 147. He last fought in December and stopped David Avanesyan in six rounds. He looks to become the first ever to be undisputed in two weight classes in the four-belt era. Jermell Charlo will get the shot in two months as well. Spence hasn't fought since last April, about 15 months ago, and stopped Yordenis Ugas in 10 rounds. Spence will look to e the second current Texan to be undisputed, Houston native Jermell Charlo holds at the straps in the division north.

A loaded undercard features a future first-ballot hall of famer Nonito Donaire, 42-7 (28), who battles criminally underrated Mexican contender Alexandro Santiago, 27-3-5 (14), Santiago has run off three consecutive high-quality victories since his controversial defeat at the hands of Gary Antonio Russell including his most recent win was over Antonio Nieves last October.

In a highly intriguing and consequential lightweight bout Isaac Cruz, 24-2-1 (17), battles undefeated prospect Giovanni Cabrera 21-0 (7). Also, in action is Cuban, 154-pounder, Yoenis Tellez.

Two Thrilling Midweek Cards on Two Different Continents

Action Packed Wednesday! Chiancone VS Hermi and Gonzalez vs Cesena

PROBX TV Series has put Wednesday Boxing on the map! This Wednesday was unusually packed jammed with action. Not only did we get a thrilling main event on the PROBOX TV card the Federazione Pugilistica Italiana (FPI) gave us a thrilling main event which aired on its Youtube channel. 25-year-old Luca Chiancone from Trieste, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy, defended his Italian Middleweight title against Yassin Hermi.

Chincone started patiently behind his jab late in the first. He had his first rally with a left hook to the body and a right hand to the head that sent his opponent reeling into the ropes. Chiancone struck again with the right hand late in the second. The Northeastern Italian started to build up a lead on the cards in the early going. However, Hermi flipped the script as a slugfest broke out in the fourth. A big body shot from the challenger put Chiancone down, but it was rightfully called a low blow, and the knockdown was waved off. However, Hermi was undeterred, and out of nowhere, a left hook, a massive looping left hand out of absolutely nowhere, scored and put the champion down and put him down hard to end the fifth.

Hermi got himself back in the fight and got new life as he came out sharp in the sixth behind his jab. it was now Hermie landing the clean one-two's in the sixth a wide right hand again hurt the map. However, Luca responded immediately with a combination of his own. Knowing he could hurt his opponent, Hermi started marching forward and unleashing power shots, mixing up head and body shots well as he seem to gain momentum and control of the fight. He switched to a southpaw stance and became the aggressor leading and scoring with right hooks. With the fight close going into the last round. Chincone picked it up in the last round. With the fight narrowing in on the cards. The champion set up a double jab, a right-hand combo that hurt Hermi. Yet, another right hand came in 20 seconds later for Chiancone. He scored with a lead left hook with just over a minute left to go in the fight. Exhausted, the champion was fighting on fumes but fighting hard. The final punch of consequence came in with just over 10 seconds, a beautiful left hook shook Hermi one final time. It appeard the champion has done enough to get the win. However, the judges disagreed and scored it a draw. With scores of 97-96 in favor of Chiancone, 95-94 Hermi, and a draw 95-95 card, allowed Chaincone to retain his Italian middleweight title via a three-way draw.

The midweek action moved to central Florida for the PROBOX TV card, and we got another thriller. Orlando Gonzalez of Puerto Rico vs rugged Mexican Ramiro Cesena. The last time we saw Cesena, he came up just short in a thrilling slugfest with Thomas Mattice. This time he came up just short in a slugfest with Gonzles in another thrilling chapter of Puerto Rico VS Mexico, Gonzalez escaped with a close but unanimous decision. Gonzalez, a southpaw, controlled the first few rounds with his jab, movement, and speed. He was able to keep the charging Cesena off of him early and score with jabs and crisp left hands.

The momentum changed in the fourth, and Cesena started landing thudding shots and closing the distance. Cessna scored with a big right hand that wobbled Gonzalez in the fourth. He was wobbled again mid-combination in the 5th as Cesena scored with a well-placed counter shot. Gonzalez fired back with a right hook as the two slugged it out to end the 5th, but it was the Mexican whowas getting the better of the action.

Gonzalez got back to boxing using the ring and his jab. He seemed to take rounds six through eight with his movement jab & boxing skills. However, Cesena roared back in the final two rounds. The Mexican backed the Puerto Rican into the ropes and knowing he was behind on the cards, started attacking, chopping away with the right hand that was affecting Gonzalez driving him in the ropes. Cesena would not go quietly, as he continued walking forward, letting his hands rip the Mexican got himself back into a fight in the final two rounds, ripping Gonzalez with body shots, and headshots, busting Gonzalez up, and making it look like a 50-50 fight going to the cards. However, all three judges favored the fighter from Puerto Rico 96-94, 97-93. Gonzalez moved his record to 21-2 (12), and Cesena fell to 16-2-1 (3).

Hughes Robbed, Robles Upsets McGregor

Hughes Robbed! Robles Upsets McGregor!

Two major cards took place on a relatively quiet weekend of boxing. The action kicked off in Edinburgh, Scotland. As the hometown hero "Lightning" Lee McGregor got upset and derailed by largely unknown Mexican contender Erik Robles. In what is a Fight of the Year, candidate Robles came out like shot-out of a cannon in the early going putting rounds in the bank. Unleashing combinations at breakneck speeds in a phonebooth fight, he was simply out-working and out-hustling the home countrymen. However, McGregor started rallying back, beginning in the fourth, as his more precise punching and harder punches were having their effect. McGregor was also winning the fight when it was on the outside, which in retrospect, should have been his game plan. It looked as if Robles was fading as his punch output began to slow down.

McGregor appeared to even the fight up going into the last couple of rounds landing body shots and his perfectly placed uppercuts McGregor even things up. However, it was Robles who got his second wind and put together large rallies and scored in combinations, and was able to hurt McGregor Several times and sustained rallies. In the 10th round, the Scotsman seemed to be in trouble as Robles landed with multiple combinations that stunned McGregor. Robles knowing he needed to win a clear-cut decision against the hometown hero, and closed the show excitingly and definitively. The cards went the correct way to the deserving Mexican road dog and not the hometown fighter by scores of 115-113X2 and 116-113.

On the undercard, Harlem Eubank gave perhaps a career-best performance. He controlled Ishmael Ellis with his jab. The better athlete, quicker, and with much quicker reflexes. By the midway point of the scheduled eight rounder it was clear that Ellis was no longer interested in winning the bout and was simply trying to survive. Repeatedly Eubank tried to pick up the pace and bring the fight to his outmatched opponent, and time and again, Ellis clinched, held, and smothered Eubank. Eubank dropped his man in the sixth, and things went from bad to worse for Ellis! He was deducted a point by the referee in the seventh and was forced to fight. Quickly thereafter, it lights out for Ellis. Eubank scored with a pair of right hands that put Ellis on the canvas and forced his cornerman onto the apron as the referee in charge waved the bout off.

The action moved to the US in the small town of Shawnee, Oklahoma. If the first card produced the Round of the Year in the tenth, this card produced the "Robbery of the Year" as Australian George Kambosos got yet another gift decision. This time against Maxi Hughes of England. After an uneventful first round, Hughes got going with a counter hook that landed on the temple of Kambosos. The Brit scored with another two-piece to the body of the Australian. Kambosos struggled to get things going and was lounging in with a jab and getting caught with clean counter shots. In what was not a high-output fight by either man, many of the rounds looked the same as Kambosos would try and jab his way in and get caught with clean straight lefts and counter hooks for his efforts. Hughes closed out his most dominant round of the fight in the fifth with a clean counter shot that buckled Kambosos and worsened a small cut on his eyebrow.

A nasty clash of heads in the sixth opened a pretty on Highes. However, it seemed not to affect him at all. Hughes continued his precision counter-punching. It appeared that Kambosos needed something dramatic in the final two rounds, and he tried picking up the pace as Hughes stayed in the pocket and stayed in control. A left hand backed up Kambosos in the 11th in a very good round for the Brit. Hughes closed the show well in the 12th and scored with a few single right hands that halted the Australian in his tracks as it appeared Hughes rolled to a wide points victory until the judges did the unthinkable and awarded the fight to Kambosos as David Sutherland handed in a poor card of 114-114 even, but was overruled, by the egregious 115-112 card handed in by Gerald Ritter and the criminal card handed in by Josef Mason of 117-111 in favor of Kambosos.

In the chief support of the evening, Keyshawn Davis stayed undefeated with a dominant one-sided beatdown of fringe contender Francesco Patera. The US Olympian was in complete control. Firing off a jab and scoring with pin-point accurate power shots throughout the fight. Davis, who has run his mouth about fellow middleweight contenders, Floyd Schofield and Frank Martin, dominated the fight but failed to stop Paera. His best shot came in the eighth round when he scored with a counter right that dropped and badly hurt Patera. Davis pushed on the gas but was unable to get his man out.

Fight Weekend Preview

Fight Week Preview

On a weekend that is supposed to be the calm before the storm, we actually have a nice little weekend of fighting. Three cards over Friday and Saturday. The action starts in Scotland at the Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh as hometown hero "Lightning" Lee McGregor, 12-0-1 (9), returns to the ring as he looks to pick up his second consecutive win following his disputed draw with Diego Alberto Ruiz back in February of 2022. He came back and scored a lopsided points victory in March and now takes on hard-hitting Mexican contender Erik Robles 13-1 (9), for the vacant IBO Super Bantamweight strap. Robles has one career defeat, a stoppage loss in March of 2020 to Carlos Daniel Acosta in a Super Featherweight affair. He has won seven consecutive since his lone defeat.

On the undercard is highly touted good-looking prospect Sultan Zaurbek, a KO artist from Uzbekistan who sports a perfect 14-0 (10). He will take on John Carter of Spain, 15-0-1 (7), in a battle of unbeatens. Harlem Eubank, son of legendary former world champ Chris Eubank will look to run his record to 18-0 against Ishmael Ellis.

The action moves to the US for the remainder of the weekend for a busy little local card at the DoubleTree in Ontario, California. Slick-moving George Acosta, 15-1 (2) from Long Beach, California, looks to remain hot in battling Edy Valencio Mercado in the evening's main event. Acosta's lone defeat came in 2019 against Ruben Torres. He has ran off eight consecutive wins including recent wins over Marlon Sims and Isaac Avelar. Also on the card is Luis Lopez, who looks to bounce back from his loss in March to Angel Beltran at the same location. Prior to that defeat, Lopez, 13-2-1 (4), had defeated three unbeaten in a row who had a combined record of 27-0-3.

The action concludes in the obscure town of Shawnee, Oklahoma, as former undefeated 135-pound world champ George Kambosos, 20-2 (10), looks to bounce back from his back-to-back consecutive defeats to Devin Haney as he takes on Maxi Hughes, 26-5-2 (5), of Yorkshire, England. Hughes is a surging fighter that has won seven consecutive fights, including victories over Jono Carroll, Paul Hyland, Ryan Walsh, and most recently, a career-best win in outpointing Kid Galahad last September.

In the CO-main event, US Olympian and all-world prospect undefeated lightweight Keyshawn Davis, 8-0 (6), take another step up and battles Francesco Patera, 28-3 (10), who is unbeaten since a 2017 loss to Edis Tatli. Fine Settimana in Italia

Fine Settimana in Italia

It was a busy weekend for the Italian boxing commission (Federazione Pugilistica Italiana) and the boxing community. Two prospect-loaded cards on the peninsula nation highlighted high-level prospects and contenders. The action kicked off on Saturday night in Verbania and highlighted two contenders closing in on world title shots. The action concluded on Sunday in the northeast region of Friuli Venezia Giulia with an ultra-competitive high-level prospect-based card.

On Saturday in Verbania, the hometown hero Ivan Zucco cemented his status as a legitimate 168-pound world title contender by dominating and outclassing Baptiste Castegnaro moving his record to 18-0 (15). Zucco was able to control the range as the Frenchmen tried to dirty the fight up on the inside. Zucco remained in control. The Italian southpaw controlled Castegnaro with straight left hands and began breaking him down and setting him up for something big. That something big came in the fourth round when a short right hook came in and flatted the Frenchmen. Post-fight, the Italian said, "I am very happy with this result because it is an important piece that adds up and projects me towards a really important fight that will be announced within days."

In the co-main event, Sandor Martin who is coming fresh off of his highway robbery loss to now 140-Pound WBO and lineal world champ Teofimo Lopez impressed again. He showed no rust or letdown in his comeback fight. Martin chased down and destroyed an outmatched Arblin Kaba, originally of Albania and now fighting out of Puglia, Italy. A much more aggressive and assertive Martin than we have seen in big fights in the past wore down and obliterated Kaba. After outclassing his man for five rounds, a barrage of hooks and power shots finally forced the referee to wave off the bout. Also on the card was rapidly rising middleweight contender Giovanni Sarchioto, known for his aggression and power punching. The big Italian was strategic and measured his jab early on, setting up the heavy artillery in the later rounds that eventually broke down an outmatched opponent named Fouad El Massoudi of France in the sixth round. Sarchioto ran his record to 8-0 (7) with the sixth-round KO victory.

The Sunday card didn't feature the name value but featured highly competitive fights from emerging prospects who were genuinely matched in 50/50 fights. In the main event Abruzzo, Italy native Luigi Alfieri moved his record to 10-3 (0) and picked up the WBC Mediterranean Welterweight strap. After a strategic start to the fight with undefeated Greek boxer-puncher Panagiotis Tsochataridis. The native countrymen was the stronger and fresher of the fighters, and pressed the action swarming in and battering Tsochataridis with body shots and a barrage of power shots that sent the Greekmen into the ropes. Sealing the deal in the final two rounds Alfieri, who now trains in the UK, needed both rounds to take a narrow unanimous decision by scores of 96-94X2.

In the vengis co-main event, Cristian Zara pulled a minor upset and dazzled Claudio Grande in a bantamweight bout to capture the Federazione Pugilistica Italiana Bantamweight strap. Zara moved his record to 10-2 (3). He outclassed Grande with his speed, jab, and footwork. He boxed predominantly off the back foot with what appeared to be the bigger man. Zara, who hails from Sardegna, Italy, closed the show in style pot shoting and avoiding the heavy artillery of Grande to secure the decision and the upset.

Martin and Cruz Shine on Saturday! 135 Even More Loaded

Frank Martin and Andy Cruz shine! The 135-Pound division is even more loaded!

The lightweight division is absolutely on fire. Last week Floyd "Kid Austin" Schofield established himself as a legit 135-pounder that everyone thinks will beat Jo Jo Diaz later this year. This week it was Frank Martin and the professional debut of Andy Cruz, one of the best amateurs of all time and Olympic Gold medalist.

Cruz made his much anticipated pro debut in a 10-round affair (hard to believe the Michigan Athletic Commission would approve that) but he looked exceptionally sharp, and all the skills that made him an all-time great Olympian were clearly on display on Saturday's co-main event in Detroit, Michigan as he took on rugged veteran Juan Carlos Burgos from Mexico. Cruz used the jab early to keep Burgos at bay and would follow up with the right hands. Burgos seemed more focused on avoiding the jab of the Cuban than he was firing off combos. As the fight progressed, the maturity and ring IQ of Cruz became evident as he used the jab to set up the right hand from a barrage of angels that Burgos, a veteran of world title fights and 45 pro scraps, had no chance of figuring out. The two-punch combinations became three and four pieces in the later rounds as the rookie looked like he could go forever. After Burgos landed way low late in the sixth, the Cuban seemed to take note and started focusing downstairs as well. The final few rounds were all the same. It was Cruz firing off a jab and then mixing up head and body shots. He never picked up the pace and never forced the action and rolled to a wide UD by scores of 100-90X2, and somehow the third judge, Gerard White, scored the two rounds for the outmanned Mexican, 98-92, to move his record to 1-0 (0).

In the main event in Las Vegas, Frank Martin got quite a scare from a harder-than-expected scrap with Artem Harutyunyan, originally from Yerevan, Armenia. Martin, coming off a career-changing performance against Michel Rivera, this was not that type of performance as the herky-jerky unorthodox movement of Harutyunyan seemed to stump Martin and cause him to shell up at times and at other times have Martin completely frustrated. Harutyunyan, took a wide lead on the card of most spectators, but Martin got going in the sixth at around the midway mark of that round Martin seemed to figure some things out and let his hands go. The American southpaw scored with a right hook and wobbled the Armenian. Martin kept on a wounded Harutyunyan, who was covering up. Martin stayed on him, attacking the body and staggering Harutyunyan up with straight lefts to the head. However, the rally was short-lived, and Martin continued to keep his hands in his pockets as Harutyunyan seized control of the fight with his movement and his jab. Seemingly the Armenain taking the seventh and eighth and was off to a good start in the ninth before Martin rallied late. Martin sustained the rally this time and had his man wounded in the 10th, stunned and nearly sown in the 11th, and then forced to a knee in the 12th. The story of the fight was clear when Martin let his hands go, he dominated! When he didn't, he lost rounds. The only question was, who would the judges favor? They decided unanimously for Martin by scores of 114-113 and 115-112 X2. Moving the record to 18-0 (12).

Kelvin Davis, Lester Martinez Shine on PROBOX

Lester Martinez and Kelvin Davis shine on PROBOX TV Card

PROBOX TV Returned Wednesday night from a familiar setting, in Whitesands Events Center, Plant City, Florida. The card was absolutely loaded with world-class prospects, future world champion-type prospects. On the opening bout Kelvin Davis, the 6'1 southpaw, 140-pounder, keeps proving that he is not just the older brother of Oylmpian Keyshawn Davis, but his own man and a prospect tobe reckoned with. He dominated and outclassed a determined by in way over his head Derrick Whitley Jr. He dropped Whitley in the third with a perfectly placed body shot and finished the show in the fourth round with a barrage of well-placed power shots that put Whitley down again, and this time for good. Davis moved his record to 9-0 (6).

In the co-main event, Puerto Rican boxer puncher Najee Lopez who now fights out of Atlanta, Georgia, scored a highly suspicious first round knockdown and knockout of Christopher Brooker, a veteran of 30 fights. A short shot landed right above Brooker's ear and dropped him. Brooker stayed down on one knee and waited till the ref reached 10, and then stoodup immediatley and seemed fine. The KO victory moved his reacord to 7-0 (6).

In the main event, Letser Martinez, of Guatemala was highly impressive in a one sided beatdown of a credible opponent in Lucas de Abreu,

Sao Paulo, Brazil. Martinez was absolutely dominated his man over four one-sided rounds. Martinez absolutely punished de Abreu, and the beat down was functionally over in the 3rd, when de Abreu took a knee for a knockdown after a loaded right hook scored to the temple late in tround three. de Abreu got up on wobbly legs and went down again at the end of the round. The 4th round, prived to be the last. de Abreu took yet another knee after a barage of power shots, and the refereewaived things off at 33 seconds of the 4th.
