Fight Week Preview: 6/26-7/1
This week's action kicks off in Mexico in Culiacan, Mexico, as former 108-pound world champ Pedro Guevara of Mexico looks to stay hot as he battles Miguel Angel Herrera in the evening's main event. Guevara captured the world in 2014 when he went to Japan and outpointed their countryman Akira Yaegashi. Guevara kept that title until he dropped it in controversial fashion to Yu Kimura. The Mexican came up short in a 2017 world title bid to Kenshiro Teraji, in a contest nearly all observers thought he won. Since Guevara has run off nine consecutive wins to run his record to 39-3-1 (22). He will battle the 27-year-old Herrera, who also hails from Mexico, sports a 22-5-5 (8) record and has lost two consecutive fights. His most recent was a first-round loss to Angel Ayala Lardizabal in June 2022.
The action then moves to the UK as highly touted and hard-hitting 140-pound prospect Dalton Smith, 14-0 (10), locks up with the once-beaten Sam Maxwell, 17-1 (11), who was beatean down last year by Mexican journeyman Alejandro Meneses and bounced back with six round decision victory over Shaun Cooper back in February. Now he takes on by far the best fighter of his career in Smith also fought in 2018 on the same card as Maxwell and scored a 12-round decision over Billy Allington. Despite how highly regarded Smith is, he has been moved along quite slowly. Maxwell probably represents the biggest challenge of his career. A prospect-heavy undercard features Pat Mcormack and Hopey Price.
The action stays in the UK as two women's title fights take place at the Manchester Arena as the "'Silent Assassin' Savannah Marshall takes on "The Heavy Hitting Diva" Franchon Crews Dezurn, who has all the belts at 168. On the undercard, Natasha Jones, 13-2-1 (8), takes on Kandi Wyatt, 11-4 (3), for the vacant IBF welterweight title.
The action then moves to the US, where undefeated blue chip heavyweight prospect Jared "Big Baby" Anderson, 14-0 (14) takes on former heavyweight champion Charles Martin in the biggest test of Anderson's career. Big Baby last fought in April and scored a highly impressive win over George Arias at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. The prospect loaded undercard features some of the sports brightest prospects in boxing, including Tiger Johnson, Abdullah Mason, and Jahi Tucker and in the com in event "The Lion" Arslanbek Makhmudov comes roaring back a d puts his perfect 16-0 (15) record on the line as he fights undefeated Nigerian KO artist Raphael Akpejiori, 15-0 (14).
