Fighter of the Week: Bam Rodriguez

Every once in a great while, there comes a prospect who is fundamentally different! Who is special, unique to anything at the current time. We are seeing that coming out of Texas right now, with 115-pound WBC champ Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez. The younger brother of WBA champion Josh Franco put on another spectacular performance. His second in less than five months. Rodriguez did what Chocolatito, Estrada, and Cuadras were unable to do. He stopped Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, moving his record to 16-0 (11) made the first and possible last defense of his WBC super fly title, captures our Fighter of the Week award, and makes his case for the pound for pound list.

Sor Rungvisai is a future first-ballot Hall of Famer, who has beaten and made life miserable for the best little men of his era. He at no point poised any threat whatsoever to Rodrigeuz. The Alamo city native was in complete control from the first moment on. After the first few dominant rounds from Rodriguez, it became clear as day the Thai legend had no answers for the young Texans’ speed or angels and the only question became could he survive till the final bell. By the sixth round the answer to that became abundantly clear, he wasn’t going to make it the distance. Three consecutive jabs to begin the round from Bam .followed by a vicious Body shot on the inside revealed just how badly Sor Rungvisai was breaking down. Another one-two combo by Rodriguez late in the round wobbled the former champ. The seventh was the most dominant of the fight

Overhand left and an uppercut hurt Sor Rungvisai early in the round, and the dominance continued/Another short right hook followed by a right to the body had Sor Rungvisai in a world of trouble. The writing was now on the wall. A barrage of power shots started by a picture-perfect left hand from the southpaw left Sor Rungvisai helpless and defenseless in the ropes and bought in the referee: Mark Calo oy in to waive off the bout and give the hometown hero the eighth-round TKO victory.
