Fighter Of The Week: Joe Joyce

On what was known as “Bug Fight Weekend” it was the two biggest men, the two biggest prospects that put on the best show of a boxing centric weekend. “The Juggernaut” Joe Joyce and “Dynamite” Daniel Dubois put their undefeated record on the lines and stood toe to toe with each other for nine-plus rounds giving as good as they got. At the end of what was an excellent high-level heavyweight prizefight, it was the former silver medalist from Putney, England, who pulled the upset and got his hand raised via 10th round KO. Joyce moved his record to 12-0 (11) captured the EBU Heavyweight Title as well as the British Heavyweight title, takes home our Fighter of the Week award, and puts himself in a great position for his first heavyweight title fight or another big money fight in the first half of 2021.

Joe Joyce stuns Daniel Dubois with 10th round knockout to capture British heavyweight title | The Independent

Joe Joyce stepped into the ring as a sizeable 3-1 underdog. If he was going to have any chance of pulling the upset he was going to have to win the battle of the jabs and keep the young beast that is Dubois on the outside and uncomfortable. He got to work in the first round working the jab and dominating the opening stanza setting the tempo and letting Dubois know that this was not going to be a short night. Dubois picked up the pace in the second and third rounds getting on the inside and landing right hands that caught the attention of the former Olympian. Joyce responded in the fourth and stopped the building momentum of his younger opponent. Dubois again rallied in the fifth letting his hands go in spots and landing thudding rights. However “The Juggernaut” stuck to the game plan and kept the jab firing and It began to badly swell up the left eye. Dubois may have been winning rounds but Joyce was winning the war. and by the eighth round, Dubois’s eye was nearly shut and he was badly fatiguing. Knowing the fight was slipping away ‘Dynamite” gave one more push to try and get his stubborn opponent out, looking to create space and land a big right hand. He had moments of success and perhaps won the eighth. However, it was becoming clear he was badly fading. It was now Joyce’s time to shine and he had perhaps his best round in the ninth. Again controlling his younger opponent with his persistent jab and mixing in a sharp straight right hand. The 10th round proved to be the last. Joyce landed a stinging jab clean on the now swollen shot eye of Dubois, who was clearly hurt and decided he had enough and decided to take a knee and not beat the 10-count of referee Ian John-Lewis. Handing Joyce the 10th round KO victory.

Tyson Fury sends message to Joe Joyce after he beats Daniel Dubois | Metro News

The stunning knockout of Dubois is the third impressive name that Joyce has put on his resume in the last two years. Adding Dubois to a resume that already included former world title challengers Bermane Stiverne and Bryant Jennings certainly puts The Juggernaut into the Top 10 of the heavyweight division and on a fast track for a world title shot. The only hold up is that both heavyweight titleholders seem to be busy at the moment. AJ is scheduled to fight his mandatory Kubrat Pulev on December 12th and Tyson Fury is stuck somewhere in the middle of a trilogy with former heavyweight champ Deontay Wilder and wanting a tune-up in the near future. Either way, a Joyce title fight may be on the back burner until the second half of 2021. In the interim, a scrap with former undisputed cruiserweight champ Oleksandr Usyk, who is in a similar position as Joyce, would make a lot of sense. Additionally, It would be a rematch of their memorable battle in the World Series of Boxing back in 2013 and would be a big payday for both former Olympians.
