It looks like almost a certainty that Errol Spence and Danny Garcia will square off this fall. Following Spence’s horrific auto accident it was unknown if Errol Spence would fight at all in 2020 yet alone a meaningful fight. That doubt became all but a certainty when the Coronavirus pandemic took hold, and it looked like there would be no more major fights at all for the remainder of 2020. However, here we are. On the verge of an Errol Spence vs former two-weight division world champ Danny “Swift” Garcia scrap is all but done for this fall. A Pay-per-view showdown between two of the biggest names in the sport while both in their primes.
There is a three-way race for the best welterweight in the world. Undefeated WBO world champ Terence “Bud” Crawford, the legendary Manny Pacquiao, and the unified WBC/IBF Champ Errol Spence Jr. This fight as good as it is, and it’s a good competitive fight, doesn’t get us any closer to finding out who the best fighter in the weight class is. If Spence wins, so what? If Garcia wins, it doesn’t make him the best in the world at 147, beating Spence doesn’t propel him over Crawford or Pacquiao. This fight is really just window dressing it could create more questions then it can possibly answer. Regardless of who wins, and Spence is a sizeable betting favorite it gets us no closer to solving the problem of whos the best ion the world at 147.
All That being said this is a good fight. Two of the top 10 welterweights each in their primes fighting one another. That’s a good thing, except why are we getting this fight? Terence Crawford vs Errol Spence is the fight everyone wants to see. Its the fight everyone wants and its the fight fans deserve. Boxing fans have supported Spence buying his PPV’s making him rich and making him a star. Now he needs to return the love and fight the best! We’ve supported you know give us the fight we want. On the other side of the equation, Crawford needs a dance partner! This is the best fight in the entire sport of boxing it deserves a negotiation. At least sit-down and negotiates with the pound for pound elite. If that can’t be made, and it can be, Bud will be more than happy to negotiate as opposed to take another meaningless fight against a who’s who of the Top Rank stable. But if it really can’t be made then sit down with Manny Pacquiao and work out a deal. There’s absolutely no reason that fight couldn’t be made. Pacquiao has one fight left on his PBC deal there’s no reason why it cant be against Spence for 3/4th of the welterweight hardware. Spence vs Garcia is a good competitive scrap but its not something fight fans should have to settle for.
