Fighter Of The Week: Ryan Garcia

On a loaded weekend of boxing that had a little bit of everything, including an incredible come from behind last second stoppage victory as well as a masterclass performance from one of its brightest young world champions. One performance, one knockout outshined everything else that happened in the busy week. of prizefighting 21-year old Ryan Garica’s now-viral left hook over his opponents right hand that landed perfectly on the chin of Francisco Fonseca’s normally sturdy chin and put him Reout cold before he even hit the canvas, no need for a count referee Raul Caiz immediately waved off the fight giving the 21-year-old protege the first-round knockout and our Fighter of the Week award. Garcia picked up his 20th win and 17th knockout in 20 professional bouts.

It would be hard for Ryan Garcia to improve on his previous performance a sensational one-punch first-round knockout over rugged contender Romero Duno on the Canelo vs Kovalev undercard. But King Ry was able to somehow give an even better performance in front of his hometown crowd at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California against former two-time world title challenger Fransico Fonseca of Nicaragua. King Ry has made a habit of making his ring walks and introductions longer than the actual fight. Garcia’s last two fights have totaled 2 more and 58 seconds or less than one full round, combined. The night couldn’t have possibly gone better for the young California native, clearly looking to score with the left hook Garcia partially landed with two big hooks that seemed to catch the4 attention of Fonseca if nothing else. At 58 seconds into the fight another left hook buckled the overmatched Nicaraguan and sent him backward. A final left hook came just 16 seconds later than put Fonseca flat on his back and out. Giving Garcia a knockout just 80 seconds into the opening round.

Ryan Garcia is a superstar and Saturday night in Anaheim he should he had superstar skills. He has put himself in a position where he can call his own shots. He has both WBA lightweight champ Gervonta “Tank” Davis and WBC champion in recess Devin Haney calling him. Post-fight Devin Haneys’ dad approached Bernard Hopkins a Golden Boy Partner a demanded a fight be made between the two 21-year old sensations. Both fights are intriguing matchups for Garcia, they will, however, most likely have to wait till the end of the year. It looks to be all but official that Ryan Garcia will be batteling former three-division world champ Jorge Linares this summer in the Staples Center in Los Angeles in what will most certainly mark the biggest test of the young protege’s career.
