Fighter Of The Week: Hector Tanajara Jr

On another relatively quiet weekend of boxing, there was one red-hot Texas-based card that showcased a litany of young fighters from the Lone Star state, however one rising star put on a boxing clinic that shined brighter than all others to capture our Fighter of the Week award. In the opening bout of the televised portion of the Golden Boy card, undefeated lightweight prospect “El Finito” Hector Tanajara Jr put on an absolute sweet science clinic from the beginning to el finito. Winning every round on every scorecard and completely outclassing Ezequiel Aviles, a rugged and game veteran in defending his WBC US lightweight title.Tanajara landed at will and showed off brilliant lateral movement and keen defensive skills that have him on the verge of a world title shot. Post Fight El Finito was quite pleased with his performance saying: “I felt I gave a good performance, one of my best performances yet, thanks to all my hard work at the gym with my trainer and coach Robert. Everything I worked for in the gym paid off.”

Hector Tanajara, the young prospect said he was excited to return to his home state of Texas and put on a show for his home fans. Tanajara certainly delivered on that but didn’t let his excitement or emotions get the best of him. The blue-chip prospect stayed composed and in control, throughout the 10-round affair, The Texan was the naturally taller and rangier fighter and used his natural advantages to perfection. Controlling the shorter Aviles with his jab perfectly, using it to keep him at distance and set up a pinpoint accurate right hand that landed on the button on demand all night long. Tanajara built up a big lead on the cards through the first six rounds using his lightning-quick jab. Knowing he was in complete control and way up on the cards and sensing his opponent was wearing down, Tanajara picked up the pace in round seven and started firing off lead left hooks and left uppercuts that stopped Aviles in his tracks and caused him to go into retreat. Over the last three rounds, Aviles became target practice for the sharpshooting Texan. Tanajara controlled the final stanzas, making Aviles miss wildly and then countered him perfectly with left hooks and right hands. If there was a bright side for Aviles he survived to the final bell. Tanajara took a unanimous lopsided decision.

Tanajara Jr put on a masterful performance in the ring in Texas on Saturday night winning the fight in complete shutout fashion, all scorecards read 100-90. Meaning El Finito won every round on every card, however, his loudest statement likely came after the fight when he called out fellow undefeated Golden Boy promoted lightweight “King Ry” Ryan Garcia. “The only fighter right now I want is Ryan Garcia. We work for the same company, I haven’t turned down a fight Golden Boy has given me and neither can he.” Garcia fights Avery Sparrow next month and should he win the timing would be perfect for an all Golden Boy lightweight showdown with Tanajara and the winner being fast-tracked for a world title fight early next year.
