Fighter Of The Week: Anthony Fowler

On what was a relatively quiet weekend for big-time boxing, Anthony Fowler showed the skills and composure that made many think he was the next big thing in the 154-pound division. Rebounding nicely from his loss to unbeaten Scott Fitzgerald back in March. Fowler, of Liverpool, was fighting as a middleweight, dominated Brian Rose over the entirety of the 10 round scrap for the World Boxing Organisation Inter-Continental Middleweight Title, as well he captured our Fighter Of The Week Award. Fowler controlled nearly every moment of the bout by out jabbing Rose who was considered to have one of the premier jabs in the division as well as putting together a relentless body attack that wore his veteran opponent down over the 10 round affair.

Fowler relentlessly attacked the body of his opponent and out jabbed Rose, the jabber, all night long. Fowler who was able to dictate the range with his jab consistently penetrated that high guard of Rose with both the jab and the occasional right hand. The Liverpudlian’s mixed up the head and body attack perfectly and built up a big lead on the cards going into the middle rounds. Knowing he was badly behind on the cards Rose decided to let his hands go more in rounds six and seven, landing several right hands that Fowler seemed to feel. and appeared to be battling his way back into the fight. However, Fowlersbody attack was taking its toll. An eighth-round uppercut seemed to hurt Rose and once again shift the momentum back to the side of Fowler who wobbled his opponent with a right hand in the ninth. To start the final stanza, Fowler didn’t rest on the lead he had built up on the cards, rather he looked to finish the Merseysider. Hurting him badly with yet another massive right hand and followed up with a whirlwind of power shots, as he looked to get the stoppage. but the final bell rang to save Rose. The decision was academic as Fowler took a lopsided UD by scores of 98-92 twice and 97-93.

Saturday night at the Exhibition Centre, in Liverpool wasn’t just a must-win fight for the hometown fighter. It was a fight he needed to really impress in. A fight against a tough and game challenger in Rose, Fowler needed to show that he could dominate a guy like that if he wants to be considered a legitimate force at either 154 or 160. Fowler delivered on that, taking apart the former world title challenger, breaking him down and nearly getting the stoppage in the final round. The impressive win gives the Liverpool native a regional WBO title but more importantly keeps him relevant in the picture at both middleweight and junior middleweight. Post-fight Fowler spoke oh his future and a possible rematch with Scott Fitzgerald saying “Hopefully Scott beats Cheeseman, because I believe Scott is a better fighter and then it would be a dream come true to box Scott at the end of the year. I don’t care where it is.”
