The always entertaining throwback junior welterweight Cletus “The Hebrew Hammer” scored another first-round KO. This time at the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut over the all-action Adam Mate. Following the quick work Seldin said “I am happy to be back. I have now had 2 fights since coming back from the Tommy John surgery I had last year and I feel like it’s back to normal. I can’t wait to get back in the ring again and want to thank Joe DeGuardia [Star Boxing] for keeping me busy and all of the “Hammer-Heads” who came out to support me. I am ready for the top guys in my division.” The Long Island native is currently promoted by Joe Deguardia’s Star Boxing
20-year-old Texan Vergil Ortiz had a massively successful weekend. culminating in knocking out a rugged Jesus Valdez Barrayan. Ortiz said that he wanted four or five fights in 2019 and to conclude the year with a world title shot. As a DFW native, the idea of a Hooker/Ortiz title fight in the big D instantly caused an immediate rush of excitement and energy. Ortiz has just called out Mighty Mo Maurice Hooker who currently holds the WBO strap. Ortiz is currently ranked by the WBO, and with both Texans fighting on the DAZN network, the fight should be fairly easy to make if both fighters want it. On top of that most of the other 140-Pound champions are involved in the WBSS tournament Hooker is not, meaning his big money fights and unifications bouts would have to wait until that tournament is complete. Leaving a giant hole in his schedule that could be filled in all Dallas shootout with Ortiz by years end.
Paulie Malignaggi is never timid in expressing himself and Bensonhurst’s favorite son was at it again. Calling into question the abilities of judge Tom Schreck who scored the highly competitive fight between Keith Thurman and Josesito Lopez 117-109 in favor of Thurman. “If you want something to complain about, Tom Schreck had it 117-109,” Malignaggi told a small group of reporters prior to the post-fight press conference. “So, we already know how shtty a judge he is because five years ago I already told you how shtty a judge that guy is. So, if you wanna go from that, maybe we can complain about that. The fight was closer than that.” said the former two-division world champ. It should be noted that Schreck was the swing judge in Paulie’s fight with Adrien Broner, a very competitive fight which many if not most saw in favor of Malignaggi. The first two judges scored the fight 115-113 in favor of each fighter and Tom Schreck handed in an inexplicable 117-11 card in favor of Broner to swing the fight in AB’s favor. 3DBoxing scored the Thurman/Lopex title fight 115-111 in favor of Thurman.
