Jermall Charlo won a coin toss this afternoon in New York and will headline his first major nationally televised card and kick off the new PBC/FOX contract. The card set for December 22, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, will feature Jermall Charlo defending his interim WBC title against slick boxer Willie Monroe and will be Co mained by younger brother and WBC 154-pound champ Jermell Charlo when he makes the fourth defense of his belt against Tony Harrison. The card will also feature a pair of once-beaten heavyweight prospects Dominic Breazeale and Puerto Rican heavyweight Carlos Negron, watch for the possible upset in this one. However, its a rock solid card that should draw well and garner a lot of attention. What’s most relevant is who’s headlining the event. The Charlo Twins!
PBC has just entered into a massive deal with FOX, not a big deal, but a game-changing deal. A massive contract with a terrestrial network. An agreement that is bigger than the deal Eddie Hearn inked with DAZN. An agreement that could change the way we watch boxing for the foreseeable future and can drastically increase the size and scope of the boxing audience. It’s not a niche streaming app or premium cable channel. Its free TV and has the potential to reach every American with a television in their home. It will air on the same channel that you watch the World Series and the Superbowl on. So its important for Al Haymon to deliver on the first card and establish superstars to carry the brand. Al has made his decision and he has selected the Charlo Twins and its a great selection.
As a father of twins, I can attest first-hand that people are enamored with twins. People are drawn to twins, and these twins know how to fight. This opening card isn’t the best mega fights we would have loved to see. It’s not Jermall Vs Canelo and Jermell vs Hurd which is the two fights we all want to see, and I think we will get to see next year! However, it’s a good showcase card, a good opportunity for the two bothers to show off their complete offensive skill set in front of a huge audience. It will be a huge event and figuring it is shown on free TV against no meaningful college football games, it has a monopoly on the sporting world and each fighter was matched well. Jermall should be tested but will ultimately stop Monroe, since Charlo jumped up and started fighting a world-class level of opposition his power has really moved up with him. Of his last six fights (Bundrage, Campfort, Trout, JRock, Heiland, and Centeno) all solid fighters only Trout was able to make it out of the 5th round. Monroe who is a slick and athletic fighter has lost both of his major step up fights (GGG, Saunders) will present some resistance and make Charlo work, but will likely end up flat on his face. In the Co-main Jermell will be tested by Tony Harrison but like Monroe, Harrison has lost his step up fights to both Jarrett Hurd and Willie Nelson and certainly seemed to get a very friendly decision against Ishe Smith. He will have some success and may even take some rounds from Jermell but that will likely come to a screeching halt as well, as the offensively compete champ with his new found power will finally find its mark and end a competitive fight. Jermell was seen as not a puncher, a reputation he has rightfully trashed since it came into question against Vanes Martirosyan since then he has knocked out four consecutive world class fighters (Alcine, Jackson, Hatley, and Lubin) before being forced to go all 12 rounds against Trout in his last outing.
As the Texas twins are propelled to headliners and poster boy for the new PBC/FOX deal this card will be the perfect opportunity to boost their popularity and show off their offensive skills. We predicted that Jermall Charlo had the best path/skills to become the next American superstar and apparently Haymon and the PBC family agreed. The unique power, offensive skill set, looks, and big personalities of the Charlo’s is the perfect combination for these two brothers to make them superstars in boxing and crossover stars among casual sports fans. Both fighters will have plenty of Opportunites and mega fights in their talent-loaded divisions. Both this stage on December 22nd were both men can put on sensational performances in front of a big audience and increase their profiles and profitability and make them household names as they enter 2019 and make mega fights against Canelo, and Hurd respectively.
