Can’t Blame GGG For Whatever Happens on May 5th

There’s been no bigger critic of Gennady Golovin’s resume then 3DBoxing. When Golovkin fought Kell Brook we called the fight a joke. When Golovkin ducked Andre Ward, Sergio Martinez and openly ducked Peter Quillian we criticized his resume and called him out for ducking the big fights. If Brook could jump up two weight classes to fight GGG, why couldn’t G jump up eight pounds to fight Ward or fight Froch in what would have been an instant classic and the way those two can hit and take a shot it had middleweight Gatti/Ward written all over it. Instead of pushing for greatness, in mega fights with Sergio in 2012 or 2013, or Andre Ward or Froch at 168 or unifying with Quillian. Golvkin settled for mediocrity. Fighting a bunch of B and C level fighters, Gabe Rosado, Nobuhiro Ishida, Matthew Macklin, Curtis Stevens, Osumanu Adama, Daniel Geale and Marco Antonio Rubio aren’t exactly the stuff legends are made of. If Floyd Mayweather would have fought these types of opponents he would have been criticized to no end and rightfully so. When GGG said it was his dream to unify all the middleweight titles and Billy Joe Saunders who held the WBO strap agreed to all the terms GGG demanded including fighting in Kazakhstan, and GGG still opted out. We called him out for the duck.

When Canelo Alvarez failed multiple drug tests and withdrew from the May 5th mega-fight the boxing world took a massive hit and was more than disappointed. As much as we have criticized Golovkin for his cherry picking and lack of making certain big fights and not fighting the best, he made the fight with Alvarez and the rematch. This fight failing apart is 100% Canelos fault and 0% GGG’s fault. The fact that Golvkin has thrown around names like Jaime Munguia an unknown and unbeaten 154-Pound prospect who fought eight times in the last 12 months and his opponents have a combined record of 151-85-12 or Vanes Martirosyan who is a 154-pounder who has been inactive for two years and has lost every single one of his big fights or Gary O’Sullivan who lost to BJS and Eubanks Jr and just isn’t very good. None of this is Golvkins fault. If you are upset with these names being thrown around as Golvkin’s next opponent blame Canelo, not GGG. When a mega fight falls apart just weeks before fight night. A+ level opponents don’t go in as last-minute replacements. It’s not good for the fighter and it’s not good for the sport neither fighter has had a full camp preparing for each other and aren’t fighting at their best. So what you get is a low-level fighter who is being paid a career-high purse to take the toughest fight of his life on short notice.

When the biggest fight in the 90’s, Evander Holyfield vs Mike Tyson was scheduled to go off back in November of 1991. Mike Tyson had to pull out of the fight. The “Real Deal” was left to find a last-minute replacement. Holyfield one of the sports truest Warriors who feared no man and would fight anyone would never be called a cherry picker. Who was Mike Tyson’s replacement to challenge for the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world? Francesco Damiani… Who? … Does getting Knocked out by Ray Mercer and beating Everett Martin qualify you as a replacement for Iron Mike? Does it qualify you to fight for the biggest crown in all of sports? Hardly. But, the news got even worse, Damiani injured his foot and had to pull out of the fight. Again, a replacement was needed. That replacement was journeymen Bert Cooper. A fight so unimpressive the WBC refused to sanction the fight. Was any of this Evanders fault? Of course not. Holyfield went out agreed to challenge himself and dare to be great by fighting the best and things didn’t work out. So he stayed active and fought a lower level fighter on short notice. No one was asking for a Holyfield/Cooper fight, nobody was particularly excited about it and no one would ever call Holyfield a ducker or a cherry picker.

Simply give that same level of respect to Golovkin. This is not his fault, he made the fight we wanted to see and Canelo screwed it up. Now he has to take a short notice fight. if Demetrius Andrade is for real in his offer to fight Golovkin on short notice as Andrade states and GGG refuses to fight him because he’s a southpaw that’s a duck. If no fight comes off and the “injured” Billy Joe Saunders fight can be made for June and Golovkin refuses that fight again, that’s a duck. Or if Jermall Charlo takes care of Huge Centano Jr and wants to quickly turn around and Golovkin immediately after the Centano fight and GGG’s refuses that’s on GGG. However, if Golovkin doesn’t want to wait until June if he wants to fight on his scheduled date and only B or C level fighters are available and willing to fight and Cinco de Mayo is a bust. That’s Canelos fault, not Golovkin’s.
