Errol Spence Jr just put on a masterful performance, dominating a top notch two weight division champion. He outboxed, outmuscled and outpunched Lamont Peterson. Errol “The Truth” Spence lived up to his nickname in putting forth the best performance of his young career. It was a superstar making performance, one the removed any lingering doubt. To which WBC/WBA Welterweight Champ Keith “One Time” Thurman tweeted “I see you young buck. be patient your time is coming”. This comment by “One Time” made absolutely no sense at all. Thurman is only 15 months older than Spence. This would be like Mayweather calling Pacquiao young buck or Sergey Kovalev calling Andre Ward young buck. It’s a non-sensical statement. It’s become quite clear that Keifey & The We Don’t Want No Smoke Welterweights are not chomping at the bit to hop in the ring with Spence.
So, if Garcia, Porter, Thurman, Pacquiao, and Horn will not step up to fight Spence, what is a budding superstar to do? Spence is a really big and strong welterweight, so a move up in weight is reasonable under the right circumstances. It would have to be a mega fight to leave 147. The Juice would have to be worth the squeeze. No one at Jr. middleweight really fits the bill. However, at 160 sits the regaining cash cow of the sport, Canelo Alvarez. After, calling out “Sometime” Thurman in the post-fight interview, Spence, in the press conference reconfirmed his willingness to move up to 160 and fight the redhead from Guadalajara.
Errol Spence is said to be making a homecoming defense of his IBF title in Dallas in either May or early June. Canelo is fighting GGG on Cinco de Mayo. This puts the two on a perfectly time collision course to fight each other on Mexican Independence Day in Texas, most likely AT&T Stadium (Cowboys Stadium). As a Texan hosting a mega fight of this magnitude is certainly exciting. The fight would be a hellacious war that would feature gruesome body attacks from each fighter.
Although, this is a perfectly timed and exciting fight on paper, does it make any sense? Two 147 pounders have recently jumped up to take on the kings of the middleweight division in recent history. Both Khan and Kell Brook had their careers seriously derailed in these jump ups in weight. The sport has weight classes for a reason. Canelo is a pound-for-pound elite fighter and just look at how many catchweight fights he had in moving up from 154 to 160! He fought guys like Lara, Cotto, and Khan all at catch weights, before comfortably moving up to 160 to fight GGG. For Spence to jump up 13 pounds all at one clip to take on a brutal fighter like Canelo seems insane. However, Spence seems confident in his ability to fight Canelo, he has called Canelo out in the past, going back to 2016 when Canelo was fighting Liam Smith in Spence’s hometown. For Alvarez and Golden Boy, it actually makes a lot of sense. If Canelo beats GGG in May, he will have three logical opponents. Billy Joe Saunders, who is a quick-footed master boxer and a stylistic nightmare for Golden Boy’s top earner, they will probably want to avoid that. Another option would be Jermall Charlo, who is naturally bigger than Spence. Charlo a 6-foot tall wrecking ball of a power puncher who would pose a bigger threat than Spence because of his natural size would not be any bigger of a draw than Spence. “The Truth” is actually a much bigger draw than Charlo. The third option would be Spence, who is neither a stylistic nightmare for Golden Boy’s golden egg nor a naturally bigger man like Charlo and is a bigger draw. This fight actually makes sense and is a reality for late 2018.
For Spence a Texan, he drew a crowd of 12,000 in Brooklyn, NY. He is becoming a megastar in the sport. If he could pull an upset over the Mexican icon, it would cement his status and prove true the rumor that he is actually made up of the same stuff that Captain America’s shield is made out of. Spence would have the opportunity to become the face of the sport and the next major Pay Per View draw and would have a wide array of welterweights to middleweights to cash in on. A Canelo/Spence clash is a logical money making fight for Canelo and a once in a lifetime opportunity for Spence to become the face of the sport. That’s why this fight may be made in 2018.
