5 Reasons for Lomachenko To Stay At 130

So much have been and so many mega fights have been drawn up with Vasyl Lomachenko jumping up to higher weight classes and taking on the likes of Mikey Garcia, Robert Easter or even Manny Pacquiao who Freddy roach said can still make 135. The truth is Hi-tech is not a ultra big Jr. Lightweight, when compared to the other top 130 pounders, like Miguel Berchelt and Tank Davis who are much bigger physically than him. Lomachenko is very much built like a 126 pounder who just happens to fight at 130, and he’s skills are so that he can dominate the bigger guys. Additionally, Loma has just one of the four straps at the weight class so its not like he has ran throw the division and cleaned it out. There is no reason for Lomachenko to abandon 130 for bigger guys. He has plenty of work to do at the weight class and there are at least 5 big money fights he can take

Miguel Berchelt- Berchelt is currently ranked #9 on the 3DBoxing pound for pound list. He will get some consideration for fighter of the year. 2017 was a sensational year for him knocking out Francisco Vargas and dominating Takashi Miura who was coming off a knockout victory over Miguel Roman, which looks even better considering how Roman disposed of Salido . Berchelt is a popular Mexican fighter who has grown a larger fan base with his mauling, knockout style. He currently holds the WBC version on the 130 pound division. The fight would sell huge out west probably in LA , wither the StubHub center or Staples center would make a great home for this fight.

Gervonta “Tank” Davis- This is probably the biggest money fight available to Loma without moving up. Tank, was viewed as the second coming, Floyd’s understudy. That has lost some moment, mainly due to his problems inside and outside the ring. Davis’ lost his IBF belt on the scales back in August and followed it up with a subpar performance which he did win via controversial Knockout over largely unknown Francisco Fonseca. Prior to the Fonseca fight Tank was on cruise control.  He was living up to the hype by knocking out and taking the “0s” from Liam Walsh and Jose Pedraza. At the end of the day it was a very good 2017 for Tank, his name has been linked to Loma before, the fight would display world class speed and skill from both parties and would be an amazing display of athleticism.

Santa Cruz/Mares winner- While this fight has not formerly been announced it’s a formality for early 2018.  Both fighters put on an offensive show on a card their shared back in October and it was a teaser for the upcoming rematch. Either fighter would present a major challenge for Lomachenko. It would be interesting too see how Lomachenko would deal with the tremendous punch output of Santa Cruz. There names were attached back in 2015 but nothing ever came of it. Mares would also present a big challenge to the WBO champ, he is a complete offensive fighter that can box and mix it up. He has tremendous power and the experience to make it really interesting. Either Mares or Santa Cruz are California boys are sell pretty well out there. Loma taking on the winner of this rematch in Southern California would be a really hot ticket.

Gary Russel Jr rematch- Russell has been highly inactive since losing to Lomachenko back in 2014. Fighting just once in 2015, ’16 and ’17. His knockout victory over Oscar Escandon was highly impressive, a very tough Colombian. Escandon has been in with high level opposition and he has never been outclassed and stopped like Russell Jr did. Russell has a million and half excuses for what went wrong in their first meeting, and he did look a bit lethargic, so why not move up to 130 and make sure weight isn’t an issue. The rematch will clear up any questions if Russell’s biggest problem in their first meeting was weight related or simply that Loma was that much better than him. Gary Russell Jr is a DC native and Lomachenko fought recently in the area and drew a nice crowd. Making the DC area the perfect home for a rematch.

Tevin Farmer- Farmer is coming off a controversial loss, actually there was nothing controversial about, he clearly won the fight and had it stolen by two really bad judges. Despite the “Loss” Farmer is a fan favorite and people like his story. He is a special defensive technician with unique abilities. This fight could produce the type of genius that we were hoping for in the Rigondeaux fight. Farmer says he has the style and is the one that can beat Lomachenko. He would certainly be a prohibitive underdog, but Farmer’s always been the underdog and has thrived in that role. Farmer is an east coast guy, a Philly fighter, and Loma just sold out the small room at MSG, based on how quickly Loma sold out the small room and Farmers east coast presence it would make MSG the perfect home for this fight.
