GGG & Canelo: A Great Night For Boxing

If everytime the NBA mentioned Michael Jordan the Chicago Bulls and their six Championships, every NBA  pundit and commentator pointed out that Jordan pushed off Byron Russell on his famous last shot to win game 6 of the ’98 NBA finals to clinch his sixth and final Championship. Or if everytime the NFL talked about their “golden boy” Tom Brady, they brought up the “Tuck Rule” and that he really fumbled the ball in the blizzard and got away with murder. That would be good for no one, it would be stupid to constantly bring it up over and over again human error is something that has always been apart of sports. The fact that Tom Brady and Michael Jordan got away with one doesn’t tarnish their legacy and it wasn’t a black eye for their sports.

Adelaide Byrd’s Scorecard of 118-110 was not great. It’s giving the casuals and the ESPN’s of the world who ignore and bash our sport and treat it like a red-headed stepchild all the ammo in the world to say the sport is fixed and corrupt. But their sports are clean? NBA ref  Tim Donaghy was in jail for fixing games including the NBA Western Conference Finals.  The NFL, has  Spygate, as well the refs can’t even decide what a catch is and a  litany of other issues, let’s not even get started on the MLB steroid issue. Every sport has problems, problems with corruption, but those sports focus on their great moments, not the few bad moments. After a great fight and the GGG/Canelo was a great fight to ignore the fight and to harp on how bad one of the three scorecards was, thus the sport is corrupt is ridiculous and terrible for the sport. The fight should have been celebrated. We got a great a Middleweight war that demands a rematch because it was entertaining and competitive and going into the decision we knew it was going to be 50/50. It was a great night for boxing that demands another great night that hopefully is as good as the original. it certainly wasn’t a black eye for the sport. What is a black eye is the reaction.
In all disclosure, I scored the fight 116-112 in favor of Canelo. The fight was ultra competitive and difficult to score. HBO’s constant cheerleading doesn’t help. If you were to tell me, three judges would have it all three ways, I’d say so be it, that’s the type of fight it was.

Adelaide Byrd’s Scorecard is going to come under scrutiny. Maybe the NSAC should take a look at her card, maybe they should review they cards of all their judges, and don’t overlook, Dave Moretti. Was his scorecard really any better?  Moretti scored every round from three to nine for Golovkin, really not a single competitive round did he think Canelo took? That doesn’t raise any eyebrows. There’s a history of inept scorecards out of this veteran judge that goes back for years. Take a look at some of his horrendous scorecards.
Dave Moretti 113-114 Pacquiao over Vargas. 6 rounds a piece the knockdown being the difference? That’s amazingly bad.
Dave Moretti  119-109 Canelo over Cotto. He gave Cotto one round! Huh?
Dave Moretti 115-111 Porter over Broner. Really you had the fight this close?
Dave Moretti 86-86 Lara Draw Vanes Martirosyan: Lara landed 74 punches to Martirosyan’s 33. Erislandy landed 40 power punches; Vanes landed 27. Lara landed more punches than Martirosyan in every round
Dave Moretti 115-113 Pacquiao over Marquez III- One of the worst robberies of the decade.

Perhaps it’s just bad judging, not corruption. Bad officiating has certainly been apart of the NBA finals, their ratings we near all-time highs. Bad officiating doesn’t kill a sport, but officiating is a part of a sport all sports.  Bashing your own sport after a great night does.
