2017 has been a banner year for boxing. it’s been all about for mega fights and the best fighting the best. What would be a better way to close out the year than in the last month of the year The Mecca of Boxing hosting two more mega bouts? First, on December 8th Lomachenko defends his 130-pound title against Guillermo Rigondeaux and then at the very end of the year on December 30th perhaps Miguel Cotto Defends his shiny new WBO title against Mikey Garcia. Mikey has thrown the gauntlet to the bigger legendary Puerto Rican Champion.
Boxing is in need of a major Pay per view attraction. Manny no longer does those numbers and Mayweather is retired. Canelo does pretty good numbers but often is reluctant to take big fights and fight the best. Mikey doesn’t have the problem, he is seemingly willing to do whatever has to be done to fight the best. He is a contractual free agent has no promoter. He can fight whoever he wants. He can name his opponents, he has a title at 135, jumped to 140 to take on Broner right away now he’s calling out Miguel Cotto, he’s also called out Keith Thurman.
Mikey is not a huge box office draw, he doesn’t do huge numbers he doesn’t have the gift of gab or a larger than life personality, as a natural 135 pounder doesn’t make him a typical PPV attraction. So do the only thing you can do to sell yourself. Move up in weight classes and knock everybody out and beat everybody. That’s exactly what Mikey Garcia is doing he is 37-0 (30) and still only 29. He seems to be taking the Manny Pacquiao approach. Screw weight classes just fight the best guys out there and beat them. Reckless abandon forget the precious “0” and go for greatness. Garcia has been jokingly called Mickey Mouse, we may have to start calling him Mighty Mouse instead.
This fight really can’t happen right? I mean this is just a nonsense call out right? I mean Mikey is the Lightweight champ. Cotto is the Jr. Middleweight Champ. Wrong! This fight is going to happen. After the Kamegai fight, Freddie Roach Called out the winner of the Canelo/GGG fight for Cotto. That would give the winner only three months to turn around and fight Cotto, probably not going to happen, plus there’s a rematch clause. That’s not going to happen. Miguel Cotto signed with Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya has been trying and trying to sign Mikey, and Mikey really wants this fight. Oscar puts a little stipulation in there that puts a little 2 or 3 fight deal and that wrap it up with the biggest pay day of his career on PPV and he’s got himself a deal.
Cotto is not a very big Jr Middle, it’s been rumored the Cotto could still make 147, but at this age and stage of his career, he no longer wants to shred the weight. If we were talking about Andrade, or Lara or Charla or 6’2 Jarrett Hurd this would be a very different story but a relatively undersized 154 pounder, Mikey’s got a real good chance. He would have to use every ounce of his perfect boxing skill. Not get as brave as he did against Broner because getting hit by AB is one thing getting hit by Cotto’s left hook is something different. But, Mikey would have a real chance in this fight.
