The Texas boxing scene is on fire, and we aren’t just talking about Errol Spence. Ronnie Shields has his Houston area gym blowing up. Erislandy Lara, the Charlo brothers and Mike Lee. Meanwhile, Shields isn’t resting, he is busy turning out his latest and potentially his most profitable prize fighter in his impressive stable. Undefeated knockout artist Ryan “Cowboy” Karl. The Cowboy put on a sizzling display of offensive skill and punishing power, in his destruction of unbeaten Jose Quezada. Maybe it’s my Texas pride speaking but the undefeated Karl, who improved his record to 13-0 (9), should have put the supremely talented Welterweight Divison on notice. Karl, has Keith Thurman type one-time power and a stiff eye opening jab and really fundamentally sound footwork. His only noticeable flaw, he gets a bit sloppy dropping his hands defensively but certainly his 2-hour commute to Ronnie Shields’ gym each day will sure up his defensive shortcomings for sure. Hopefully, we get to see Karl again in 2016 and a few steps up in 2017 and by 2018, we should have ourselves another world champ from the Lone Star State. I would like to see him step it up against, either Danny O’Connor or have an all out slugfest with fellow unbeaten, and Jersey-based welterweight Julian Rodriguez. I really want to see this one. Not sure either side will want to put up their fighters 0 against the other guy, but it would fast track the winner and it would be so fan friendly the loser would take a step forward and set himself up for a bigger money fight.
